Comparing Galaxies (MATH 7/8)

October20

There are many different galaxies located outside our own Milky Way galaxy. These galaxies are light years away from earth but advancements in technology have given us the amazing ability to observe these galaxies. I have listed a few of the galaxies that are nearest to ours. Your job is to list them in order from nearest to farthest. When you create your list, make sure that you include the NAME of the galaxy AND the DISTANCE it is from our galaxy. Since these are REALLY big numbers, be sure to write your numbers using scientific notation.

The Large Magellanic Cloud

This is the Large Magellanic Cloud. This galaxy is located 1.60 x 10^18 km from the sun.

Safari003

This is the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy. This galaxy is located 236,000,000,000,000,000 km from the sun.

Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy

This is the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy. This galaxy is located 6.62 x 10^17 km from the sun.

Safari005

This is the Small Magellanic Cloud. This galaxy is located 1,980,000,000,000,000,000 km from the sun.

    ——————————————————————————————-Dear Mrs. Ellison,

I have finished your activity mostly on Microsoft Excel. ( This is what you get from a computer geek for a mom.) How I did it is I first copied all the data you gave me, made the scientific notation numbers into the numbers they where before, ordered them from least to greatest, put the galaxy to their number, made all of the numbers in scientific notation, and finally I put the data in the way I put it above. I know the explination
is boring but I still got an answer.

    Your satisfied student,
    Loren T. Elder
