You may have seen this post on social media.  When people answer in the ‘comment’ section they are so sure they are right (when they are not).  What is the correct answer for this problem?  What do you think is the most common wrong answer?  What mistake are people making when they get the wrong answer?  What ‘skill’ do you need in order to solve this problem successfully? Please feel free to reply to other students’ comments as well and defend your solution or POLITELY explain why you feel their solution is incorrect! 🙂

    I think that the most common answer is 13 the mistake that people are making is they aren’t multiplying the 0. I think the skill you would need to answer this question is you just need to pay close attention to the symbols and all the numbers.

      what u do first is order of operation so we are putting parentheses around the 1* 0 and adding up all the rest what people did wrong was they added up all the ones and then timesd it by zero which gave u zero

        The correct answer is 12. You have to use PEMDAS and multiply one by zero. Then you have to add all of the ones and you will get 12. I beleive that that the most common mistake that people make is that they skip PEMDAS and do the problem from top to bottom.

        The right answer is 12 . the mistake that people usually make is they forget about order of operation . in order of operation the first thing that your suppose to do is divide and mulitple. So whe you muiltiple 0 times 1 its zero so then you add up the rest of the ones getting 12.

      I disagree with you Kevin A you can get 13 but you have too multiply 0 with 13 to get 0. Every time you multiply by zero you get zero

    it is wrong because I went thourgh orders of operation of pemdas and there was no paranthes ,exponets, and there was multiplication which was 1 times 0 than you have no more multiplication or divion than you have addition which is 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+ which equals 12

    i already did this with my aunt the answer is 30 but people just add 1 plus 1 and thats it but the ones can equal 11 or 4 just to make more sence.

    The answer that i got was 1. One common mistake that people make is they think the times sign is a plus sign or something else and get 13 and the most common wrong answer is 13 or 12. The skill you need is mental math so then you don’t get confused when you do it on a piece of paper.

    If you use PEMDAS, and add up all of the ones (before multiplying it with 0), it becomes 12 once its added up, you multiply it with 0, and the answer you get is zero. After you add a 1 to the zero, the answer is 1.

    The first thing that I did was that 0*1 because of pemdas and multiplication goes first then addition comes second. So I got 0 for 0*1 then I added 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 that equals 12. In order to solve this problem successfully, the skill you need to use is PEMDAS. Since there’s no parentheses, you move on to exponents, but there isn’t any. so the next step is to multiply or divide. In this problem, there’s multiplication, and that’s what you have to do first. Then there’s adding or subtracting. In this problem there’s addition so you add after you multiply.

    For this blog i got the answer 12. I got this answer by PEMDAS. First you multiply the 1 and 0 and get 0 of course then you go through the rest and just add all of them. The most common mistake is getting the answer 1. People get this answer by just going through it regularly.

    my answer is 1 because the rest of the ones behind the 0 are meaningless because the answer would be times 0 and then you would plus one.
    there is two common mistakes for this problem
    1.they mistake they x for a +.
    2. they assume that the0 is actually a one. for example, someone sees 50×0 and automatically thinks its 50. you guys know where im getting right?

I think that the most common wrong answer is 13 cause people forget that anything times zero is zero and they multiply it by one.     The correct answer is 12. Reason being is that you have to do orders of operations first in order to get the answer. So you have to multiply first then add the ones. Then you would get 12 and that is the answer. People may get multiple wrong answers depending if they know how to add or not and their most common mistake is not doing orders of operations.

The problem when other people are doing this problem is they do the 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 first which equals 11 then 11×0 equals 0 then +1= 1 but that answer is wrong. You need to use the order of operations to complete this problem so the 0x1= 0 then add all the 12 ones and the correct answer is 12. (Order of operations)

    Really it doesn’t matter if you are right or wrong with this problem. You get 1 if you are adding everything and do ×0+1. And if you use PEMDAS, you will get 12 for adding 12 1’s and a zero. But still does it mean anything to get this problem wrong? Come On people. It’s 2015.

    Most people think its 1 because they see the times 0 and = 1 so they leave it at that, or people think its 13 because their eyes will get mixed up and think the x is a + so they think 13.

    the answer would either be 12 or 1. I got 12 by using the order of operation and one by just going strait across. I think the most common answer is 13 because they don’t do the order of operation or pay close attention to the signs. Well that’s what I think :):):)

    The answer is 12 i got this because i used PEMDAS and multiply zero then you have to add all the ones and you will get 12.What most people do is skip PEMDAS and they just do the problem.
