According to the National Retail Federation, Americans spent about $254,064,000,000 celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah this year. The U.S. Census says the population of the USA was about 316,000,000 in 2013. Assuming the population did not change in 2014, how much did each American spend during the holiday season? Write your solution as a UNIT RATE!

  13. January 13th, 2015 at 4:42 pm      Reply sydneyb2014 Says:

The denominator will be 315,000,000 Americans.

The top number will be $254,064,000,000.

254,064,000,000 To find the unit rate and get the
————————- denominator to be 1, divide
315,000,000 315,000,000 on both sides of the rate.

    315,000,000/315,000,000= 1

    254,064,000,000/315,000,000= 806.552381

If we want to get the answer simple, it’s $806.55…I think.

Therefore, each American spent around $806.55 during the holiday season.

  14. January 13th, 2015 at 6:04 pm      Reply madisono2014 Says:

804 dollars is the average amount of money an American spends on the holidays. I figured this problem out by dividing 254,064,000,000 by 316,000,000 because when in a rate 316,000,000 people is on the bottom and 254,064,000,000 dollars is on the top so you divide them both by 316,000,000 and you get the answer of 804 on the top and 1 person on the bottom so every person spent 804 dollars over the holidays.

It is $614,000,000.42 because if you want to know what each person spends during the holiday season you would want to have it like this: 254,064,000,000/316,000,000 so you would want to divide 254,064,000 by 316,000,000 to get your answer.

  32. January 15th, 2015 at 4:35 pm      Reply jiannav2014 Says:

I got my answer by turning both the numbers into a unit rate which would be 254,064,000,000/316,000,000. I put 316,000,000 as the denominater because i’m trying to find out how much ONE american speant on the holidays and in a unit rate the denominater is always 1. I divided 316,000,000 by itself which is 1, then I divided 254,064,000,000 by 316,000,000 which is 804.
