I think he solution is incorrect because first of all, when multiplying decimals you do not line up the decimal you would line up the problem like a regular multiplication problem like as if the decimals are not there. Second of all when you have your answer you do not bring the decimal straight down, you are suppose to start at the decimal and count how many spaces to the right it would take to get the the end and in this problem is took 2 spaces to get to the end. So you go to your answer and you go to the end, then you would count to the left the 2 spaces that you counted at the top and that is where you decimal place would be.

This solution is incorrect. The problem is right, but how they did they answered it is wrong.

For some reason they forgot a IMPORTANT part.
WHEN YOUR MULTIPLYING DECIMALS, YOU COUNT HOWEVER MANY NUMBERS ARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE DECIMAL.

There are two numbers on the right side of the decimals: .5 and .2.
So this persons answer is 54.0 when is should be 5.4.

The answer is wrong because when you look at the product the answer 54.0 which the number is correct but not where the decimal is placed. Also I know it is incorrect because in the problem 4.5 x 2.1 there are two decimals. Then instantly I know that you have to move the decimal twice in you answer. In conclusion the answer is wrong because the answer in the problem is has the decimal only moved once and th correct answer should be 5.40.

You don’t have to line up the decimals. All you have to do is ignore the decimals and multiply a substitute of 45 and 12 and then add the two decimals at the end, making the answer 5.4 in the end.

  6. October 13th, 2014 at 8:05 am      Reply ashleight2014 Says:

    It’s incorecct because 4.5 * 1.2 = 5.4

(last time i ust times it and put the answer down without doing the right math)

The way the student got the answer is correct, but the way the student wrote the solution is incorrect. the reason I say this i because, when they start to multiply 1 (from 1.2), they need to add a Zero before they begin to multiply the numbers. The reason it is important,is because you aways need to bring down the zero to get the correct answer.

  13. October 13th, 2014 at 8:26 am      Reply ericv2014 Says:

That is the wrong place for the decimal to be. Because you line up the decimals when your adding or subtracting. With divideing you need to think of the numbers as numbers whole numbers than you move the decimals two times because there are two numbers in front of the decimals. And thats why the student is wrong.

This problem is incorrect. It is incorrect because when you multiply you have to count how many numbers is behind the decimals in both numbers. You have to add the spaces before the decimals and however many spaces you counted you put the number of spaces behind the decimals in the end number. For example this problem’s answer would be 5.4. So there is a 5 and a 2 after the decimals that means you will count 2 spaces after the decimalin the number so you get 5.4!!!

What thisperson did was they lined up the decimals…which is fine in this because they are both double digit numbers. But when they were done with their problem they put 54.0, but the answer should be 5.40 because in the problem itself there is 1 number after each decimal so in your answer you have to move it 2 spaces to the left inseam of just bringing the decimal down!

The solution is incorrect because when you MULTIPLY you count the number of places before the decimal and put the decimal that many places, instead of dropping it straight down. For example:

    4.5
    X3.1
    ——
    45
    + 135
    —————–
180 There are 2 places before the decimals.
Therefore, you put a decimal 2 places into the product
180 turns into 1.80 which can be simplified to 1.8

The solution is incorrect. The student put the decimal point in the wrong place. Where the student was when it came to putting the decimal point in its place. When you think about it and take away the numbers behind the dec. point the problem becomes 4 x 1 which equals 4. So know matter how big you make the numbers behind the decimal point for this problem the answer shouldn’t/can’t go into double digits or under 4. So then it would be logical to move the decimal point one space to the left making the solution 5.4

      • October 21st, 2014 at 3:24 pm      Reply jasminm2014 Says:

It should be between the 5 and the 4 because you only have to move two spaces and not just bring the decimal straight down. Its two spaces because you have to move the decimals to make it a whole number and count the number of spaces while moving the decimal to the right.
        For example:
4.3 here you move only one space to make a whole number 43
x 2.3 and here you only move one place to get a whole number 23
        ——–
        43
        x23
        ——–
        129
        +860
        ——–
        9.89
I moved one space with each number to get a whole number so 1+1=2 so I move two spaces to the left.

  52. October 15th, 2014 at 4:20 pm      Reply madisono2014 Says:

The solution is incorrect because when you multiplying decimals you move the decimal over how many spaces are after the decimal. you move the decimal over on the solution. Example 4.5*1.2 after you add them up and get 540 you look up at the top and 4.5 has one number after the decimal and 1.2 has one number after the decimal. So on the solution you move the decimal over to spots so the answer is 5.40

This problem is not correct. You can not line up the decimals when doing a muliplcation problem. When I multiplyed the equation without lineing the decimals I got 5.40. You cant do this becuase the way to solve this kind of problem is when you get your answer you have to move the decimal by using the numbers in the equation and adding how many decimal spaces there are in each problem then add them together.

    Ex:
    4.5
    *1.2
    ——–
    9 0

There are two problems in the equation. The first being you dont worry about decimals UNTIL THE END. The second and bigger problem, the decimal went STRAIGHT DOWN. 56. October 15th, 2014 at 7:58 pm      Reply susanat2014 Says:

This solution is incorrect . For starters when multiplying decimals its not the same as adding and subtracting decimals. In adding and subtracting decimals you can just take the decimal straight down which is what this student did wrong in this problem. So since you cant do that in multiplying decimals the solution is incorrect. The correct way of solving this problem is to just solve the problem as if it was a normal problem and it equals 540. The next step is to count how many numbers are behind the decimals and that is two numbers. So the correct answer is actually 5.40

the answer is correct but the decimal spot isn’t , its not in the correct spot. you need to move the decimal from both numbers away from the middle so that it is a whole number so move the decimal from 4.5 to the right so know it is 45.0 do the same thing with 1.2 so know it is 12.0 so in total it took me two spaces to move the decimal from both numbers to make it a whole number so know make a decimal at the end of your answer witch is 540 so know it is 540. so since it took me two spaces to make both a whole number know i have to move the decimal from 540. to the right two times so it is know it is 5.4 so that is why the answer is incorrect

This solution is incorrect because when you multiply decimals the decimal moves how many numbers that are behind the decimals and how many times you moved the decimal that’s we’re it goes in your answer so the answer is 5.40.

  64. October 16th, 2014 at 4:48 pm      Reply josiasp2014 Says:

The solution is incorrect because the decimals were not moved over 2 times. The answer is 5.40 because the decimal has to move 2 place values.

the answer to the problem is 54.0 but the student’s computation is incorrect. When multiplying a decimal you never line up decimals. First you line up the numbers multiply like normal. To add the decimal you count over the spaces in the problem and also in the answer.
Example: In the problem 15.2 times 1 15.2 has one space and 1 has zero spaces so in the answer I will count over one space. 152 will turn into 15.2

In my opinión i think that the answer is correct, because they lined up the decimals, then multiplied five and two and got ten then she carried the one, put it over the four then multiplied two and four added the one, got nine, next she/he multiplied one and five, and carried the five down, and multiplied the four and the one. What she/he got when she was multipling, that person added 90+ 450 and got 540, then she/he put the decimal 1 space to the left and got 54.0

  67. October 16th, 2014 at 5:40 pm      Reply allysonb2014 Says:

The problem done by the student is incorrect because even though they brought the decimal strait down the need to count the total number of numbers behind the decimal 4.5 and 1.2 there’re is a total of two numbers behind the decimal in both numbers which would make the answer have two numbers after the decimal instead of one so the answer would be 5.40 instead of 54.0 that is why the students problem is incorrect.

  68. October 16th, 2014 at 5:46 pm      Reply bernicek2014 Says:

This answer is wrong because when you multiply decimal problems, you do not line up your decimals. You multiply your problem as if it were a problem with no decimals. When you are done multiplying your numbers together, you count how many numbers are to the right of the decimal (or behind) for each of your numbers. Once you have done that, on your answer you count how many spaces your answer needs and you place your decimal. So, in this case your answer would be 5.40.

  70. October 16th, 2014 at 6:47 pm      Reply angeli2014 Says:

The student was incorrect because when you are multiplying decimals when you find the answer you always count how many numbers after the decimal places to the right then you count over from the last number in the answer and count over how ever many numbers are away from the decimal!!! For example lets say the problem was 5.12 times 3.11 and the answer is 159232 there are four numbers total after the decimal in both problems so you would move over four spaces to the left and place the decimal so the answer would be 15.9232 . The answer to the problem the student solved should actually 5.4. I worked with Malea Ledesma on this blog. I’m just saying that so it doesn’t seem like we are copying each other. Thank you!!!!

  73. October 16th, 2014 at 7:08 pm      Reply julianac2014 Says:

The solution is incorrect. Since the numbers were two digit numbers, then the decimal points were lined up, but when you multiply decimals, you don’t need to line up the decimal points. The student did do all the multiplying right, so he had the right numbers. When you multiply decimals though, you multiply like you normally would, then, when you get the answer, you count how many places the decimal points are to the left. That is how many places you move the decimal over in your answer. That means that since there were two places to the left of the decimal points, the answer should have been 5.40.
    ——————————————————————–
To check your answer, you would round the decimals to the nearest whole number. Then the problem would be 5 times 1 which is equal to 5. The product 54.0 would not make sense, but the product 5.40 would because 5 is close to 5.40.
