Recently on Facebook the math problem below has been bouncing around.
It has been very interesting to see the different comments and see the passion behind the answers given. The debate is heated and each person believes that they are correct and waste no time in defending their reasoning and every defense has to do with PEMDAS.
There is a correct answer. Which one is it? Defend why you believe your answer is the correct answer?
b: is the correct answer because in math operations you do what’s in the parentheses then if the operations are the same you just work left to right so you would do 6/2 (1 + 2), 6/2 = 3 and 1 + 2 = 3 so then 3 x 3 = 9.
1+2=3 6/3=2 2/2=1 The answer is 01.
Neither . if you follow the rules of PEMDAS you get 5
Kylee,
You need to defend your answer in detail to get full points on this assignment!
I would choose B, because you do the parentheses first, and that is 6/2 x 3, and 6/2 is 3, and 3 x 3 is 9.
i got 9 because i added the paranthesis and divided than multiplied
b: is the correct answer because in math operations is 6/2 (1 + 2), 6/2 = 3 and 1 + 2 = 3 so then 3 x 3 = 9.
6/2(1+2)=01
i would choose b, because you can do the parentheses first and that is 6/2* 3, and 6/2 is 3 and 3*3is 9
i think b because u are supposed to do the parentheses first
B is the right answer because you do the parentheses first which is 3 and then you do 6/2 and get 3 and 3×3=9
the answer is one because if you undo the ( ) than you + 4 and 2 you get 6 and 6 / by 6 is one
If you follow the PEMDAS First P is parnthasees, so (1+2) is first = 3, then we follow pemdas again we get 6/2 = 3 and lastly, it shows multiplication, so 3×3=9.
People think It is A because they follow the 1+2 first, but then they get 6/2X3, and of the PEMDAS, Multiplication goes first before division, so they do 3X2 and get 6, and divide 6/6 = 1
However, In PEMDAS, You seperate them by this: PE|MD|AS
So you do parenthasees and exponents left to right, then multiplication and division left and right.
B. sense 1+2=3and 6/2 = 3 and 3×3=9
b: is the correct answer because in math work i did with the perenthesis then i divided and multiplied which is 09
9 6/2 3×3=9
The answer is B because you have to do what is inside the parenthesis first then you would get 3. then you would do 6/2 and you would get 3. next you would do 3 x 3 and you would get 09. thats how i know the answer is B. 🙂
The answer is b:9 because you always start with parenthesis [1+2]=3 then go to division and multiplication 6/2=3 x 3=9
6/2(1+2)=?
A01
b09
I say ithe answer is b. B-cause, if you you don’t mind the pun, 1+2, the parentheticals go first. That becomes 3. Don’t forget this number. Then I do division, because it’s the next operation to perform. 6/2 is 3. Now remember that number I told you not to forget? Now this is the time to use it. In the next operation of 3*3, which equals 9. And 9 is answer B.
Sincerely
Loren T. Elder
I think the answer would be B = 9 . I got this when I added 2 + 1,In the parenthesis which equals 3. Then I divided 6 by 2 which equals 3 again and since the numbers are next to each other that means to multiply. If you multiply 3 + 3 it = 9, which is B .
I got the answer 9. First, you do whats in the parenthesis, then you then you do the rest of the problem in order. 6/2 (1+2)
/\ /\

3 * 3=9
My answer is b because you add 2+1=3 and you divide 6/2 and you get 3. Then you multiply 3×3 and BOOM! your answer is 9.- Briana
(^._.^)S.
The answer is b,because your suppose to do whats in the ( ) first which is 1+2=3. Then you do 6 divided by 2 which also equals 3 then you take both 3’s then you multiply them which makes it 9 so that’s the answer.
the answer i believe is b which is 9 because 6 divide by 2 (1+2) is 9 because pemdas is what i used and 3 x 3=9
you distribute the 1+ 2 which is 2 and 4 then you add 2 and 4 which is 6 and 6 divide 6 equals 1 answer is A = 1
b, because 1+2 = 3,6/2=3,3*3=9
The correct answer would be 9 or b. I found this by doing 1+2=3, then 6/2 is 3, so 3×3=9. Thanks Ms.Ellison.
NO BRAINER!!!
the answer is B because i did the () first which was
1+2=3 which is 6/2 x 3 so i did 6/2 which is 3 then 3 x 3= 9 and thats how i got the explanation for letter B. 🙂
I got B as my answer. I got B because I did what was inside the parentheses first. I got 3. Then I divided 6/2. I got 3 as well. So I multiplied 3*3 and got 9. 9…… final answer!-_- 🙂
the answer is b:9 because you would do the 1+2 in the parentheses and get 3, then you would do 6/2 because you would do multiplication and division from left to right and get 3 and lastly you would do 3*3 and get 9 for your answer.
The correct awnser is B because you devide 6 by 2 and then add 1 and 2 and when your done with that you timex your remaing numbers and you get B.
~ Symantha A.
first I divide 6 by 2 and got 3 then I add 1 and 2 to get 3 then I multiped 3 time 3 to get 9 as my answer. My answer is b:9
~taylor
first add what is in the perenthesis which is 1+2 and that equals 3 then divide 6 and 2 and that equals 3 then you multiply 3 and 3 so b is the correct answer.
6/2(1+2)
\/
3
6/2=3
3*3=9
(9)
the correct anwser is B because 6/2=3 and (1+2)=3 and 3×3=9 so i think the correct anwser is B.
the answer would be 9 because if u use PEMDAS you would do the () first and then division
the answer is 9 because you do the () first thats three and then you divide 2 and 6 and the answern is three then 3 times 3 equals 9.
B is the correct answer because i divded 2 by 6 and got 3 the i added 1 and 2 wich equaled 3 then multiply 3*3 and your answer is 09. (:
the corect awnser is B becuse you add 1+2 then thats 3 so then you devide 6 and 2 witch is s so then you multiply 3 and 3 becuse there next to each other so you get 9
Oh no! Who does this belong to?
The answer is B because you have to follow the rules of PEMDAS
First add 1+2 and get 3.
Then divide 6 by 2 two and get 3
Finally multiply 3 and 3 and get 9.
B is the answer because you do the parentheses first then you just work left to right like you are reading a book.
B is The Answer ….
Because 6/2=3 Afterwards
I add 1+2=3
Then Multiply 3 to 3 Which equals = 9 So B Is the Answer
Well first I divided 6 and 2 and got 3 then I added 1+2 and then got three then I thought “you cant can’t the answer 1 when multiplying” so you would have to do 3 times 3 and you get 9 which is the answer to B: 09. So my answer is B:09.
🙂
The answer is b 9 It was easy because what you do is the p in pemdas is parentheses so you get the parentheses add and it’s 3 now you have 6 / 3 3 = ? Next is e which is exponents and there are no exponents M is multiplication we hold that aside because we need to use the d which is division and 6 / 2 is 3 so that multiplication we set aside will now be use for 3 and 3.
The answer is 9.
b is correct because i did ( ) first then i got 3 then + 1 then * and got 9 then i get b=9
the answer is b because first you do parentheses and you get 6/2 x 3 you do your multiplication and division left to right neither before the other so you do 6/2 which equals 3 then you do 3 x 3 which equals 9
So you do 1+3 then 6 divided by 2 they = 3 and 3 times 3 = 9 so the answer is 9
the p in pemdas is paranthesies. and then devishion, PemDas. so 2+1=3 and 6 divided by 2=3 then you distrubute 3 into 3 and u get 9. b is the correct ansawer. what some people think is that multiplication comes in front of devision peMDas, which it does, and people might think that u have to times 3 into 2 then divide by six and then it will equal 1 but the rules of pemdas is that you work from left to right and the problem whent left to right so u do division then multiplication. i belive kenny said the same thing (i read his after i commented) and hes correct.
If you follow the order of operations, the answer is 9. Do the problem in parentheses first—2+1= (3) then 6/2=3. Then 3(3) or 3×3=9. So the answer is B.9
i used order of operations and started with parentheses the I divided then I got 3 times 3 so the answer is B.9
i got a:01 i got this by adding the 1 and 2 inside the brackets which equaled three then multiplying 3 times 2 which equals 6 then divided 6 by 6 which equals 1.
6/2 (1+2)= ?
the answer is A. because first you do the parenthesis (1+2) =3 then you do 2*3 =6 , the last thing you do is 6/6=01
6/2(1+2)=?
Always do parentheses first 1+2 =3 then do 3*2=6 next 6/6=1
Another way is distributed 2 Into 1&2=2+4=6/6=1
So my answer is 1
the answer is B because 6 divided by 2 = 3 and 1+2= 3 and 3+3=9
I think it is b because the numbers in the parenthesis added up to three and then I divided 6 by 2 and got three and then I multiplied them together and gat 9
9. Do what’s in the parentheses and that equals 3. Then do 6/2 which is 3. Since 6/2 is right next to the parenthesis you multiply the numbers that you got from both problems to get 9
First divide 6 by 2 and got 3 then I multipled 3 time3 to get 9 as my answer is b:9
what i did was did the parenthasis first and got 3 then i divided 6 by to and got 3 and then multiplyed 3*3 and got 9 and my answer is b
The answer is 9 because you always start with parenthesis, then you multiply/divide from left to right
b is your answer. 6/2 (1+2). first you 1+2 which is 3. then you do 6/2 which is 3. then you times it because of the parenthisises. your answer is 9. Alexandra thomas 5*
the answer is b 9 because pemdas tells you to get this answer
The answer is b:09. I know this because you have to do:
6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
3(3) = 9
That’s my answer to this problem, sorry it was late.
it would be b.09 because 3*3 = 9
i got three then i divided by six and got three and timed 3×3 and got nine so my answer would be B
Jordyn helsel 5th
answer is B 9
B because 6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
3(3)9
6÷2=3
2+1=3
So 3times 3=9 so it would be B 0.9
The answer is B because you have to follow the rules of PEMDAS (:
the answer is b=09
