Double Dog Dare

March9

20140307_153640

While at the math conference in Las Vegas last week we did a scale activity. We started by building the small dog and then we were told to scale the dog by a certain amount to create a larger version. Β I took pictures of our creation to share with you. πŸ™‚

How many times bigger is our large dog than our small dog? How do you know?

Those of you who would like some extra credit, tell me the volume of the little dog and the volume of the large dog and write the volume in a ratio of little:large. Explain how you found your ratio too!

the dog is only two times larger you can tell by counting the height of blocks on the legs the smaller is 3 up and the larger is 6 up; you can also tell by the width, length, and height of the head. The width of the body is 1 on the smaller one and the larger is two. the length of the body is 4 on the smaller one and is 8 on the larger. the height of the head from neck to tip of the head is 3 blocks up on the smaller one and 6 on the larger.

  13. March 10th, 2014 at 2:47 pm      Reply lorene2013 Says:

    Dear Mrs. Ellison;

I happened by chance to see your blog assigmnment today, and it looks a little bit hard for some. I had to think just a little bit. So let’s just get to the point.

The small dog is going to be the origin. The first thing I noticed was the small dog’s leg was 1x1x3, then I looked at the big dog’s leg. I saw that it was 2x2x6. Twice as big as the small dog’s. So I figured to look at the top block of the small dog’s head. (ie- the highest block) I saw it was 1x1x1. So I thought, if the leg was twice the size on the big dog, then the head should be twice the size on the big dog as well. (2x2x2) I looked at the big dog and saw that I was correct.

This is for extra credit: I looked at the small dog and counted how many blocks it had. (22) Then I doubled that amount because the big dog is twice the size of the small dog. (2:1 (How I got this is for every two block on the big dog the small dog only has one)) I got the answer of 44 blocks on the bigger dog.

    Sincerely,

    Loren T. Elder

    ——————————————————————————————-
    Notes:

    Small Dog: 22 blocks 1x1x1
    Large Dog: 44 blocks 2x2x2
    Ratio: 2:1
    Leg size: Small Dog: 1×3
    Leg size: Large Dog: 2×6 (1×2=2; 2×3=6)

  14. March 10th, 2014 at 2:56 pm      Reply kennyc2014 Says:

It went 2 Times bigger, I know because If you look at the legs it has the height of the small dog is 3 and then the height of the big dog is 6 so I divide it, and it makes 2 times.

Each chunk on the dog is 1cmX1cmX1cm = 1cm^3
The volume for the small dog is 22cm^3

Now if I look at the large dog the dimensions are twice as large, so 1 large chuck(2X2X2) = 1 small chunk (1X1X1)
    Large:8cm^3 Small:1cm^3
So The large dog’s size is 176cm^3

  15. March 10th, 2014 at 5:14 pm      Reply elizaht2013 Says:

I think that the large dog is 6 times bigger than the small dog, because when you count the amount of cubes on the large dog, on all of its legs it has 6 cubes in each column.

Extra Credit : The little dog has 21 cubes and I multiplied 21 x 6 because I think that the large dog is 6 times bigger. So, 21×6=126 Ratio: 21:126

  16. March 10th, 2014 at 5:51 pm      Reply raynai2013 Says:

4 times bigger because I counted the squares on the side the front and on the top of each dog then added it together. I got 33 for the small dog and 132 for the big dog so then I divided 132 by 33 and got 4.

I think that the formula for volume is length x width x height so for the big dog in order to find the volume this is what I would use:
    length:48
    width:36
    height:48
    and then I’ll multiply the numbers together: 48 x 36 x 48= 82944
then I’ll do the same for the small dog:
    length:12
    width:9
    height:12
    and multiply the numbers together: 12 x 9 x 12= 1296

so my ratio is going to be written as little:big so my ratio is 1296:82944 and I found my ratio by finding the volume and to find the volume I had to do length x width x height so for the big dog it was 48 x 36 x 48= 82944 and for the little dog it was 12 x 9 x 12=1296 so then I had to write my ratio little:big so my answer was 1296:82944 and I think the ratio is the difference as well so the difference between the two is 81648

the small dog is 6 and the large dog is 12. I found this by counting the side of each dog in the second picture. approximately the large dog is 2x as big as the small dog. ratio- 2:12
    EXTRA CREDIT:
to find the volume I did width*length*height=volume.
the width is approx.15 for the large dog and 6 for the small dog. the length of the large dog is 4 and the small dog is 2. the height of the large dog is 12 and the small dog is 6.
next I multiply these numbers to get the volume
large dog= 15*4*12=720 (this is the volume)
small dog= 6*2*6=72 (this is the volume)
so, the volume for the large dog is 720 and the volume for the small dog is 72 πŸ™‚
