Boiling Point

January26

The boiling point of water is 212 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level. However, the boiling point temperature decreases about 1 degree Fahrenheit for every 500 feet in altitude. At this rate, what is the boiling point of water in Reno, NV if Reno’s altitude is 4400 feet above sea level? Write an equation that can be used for any city’s altitude using “b” for the boiling point and A for the city’s altitude.

  13. January 27th, 2014 at 3:38 pm      Reply lorene2013 Says:

    Well for starters we have 500 feet per 1 degree (500ft./1°). So 4000 divided by 500 equals 8 times 1° equals 8°. 212° minus 8° equals 204°. So we have left 400ft. and 400 dvided by 500 equals 4/5 (0.8). 0.8 times 1° equals 0.8°. 204° minus 0.8° equals 203.2°. So my answer to your question, What’s the boiling point in Reno, NV, is 203.2°F.

    √ 4400ft./500ft-212°F= 203.2°F
    ____________________________________________________
    Notes:

    A= City’s Altitude
    B= boiling point

    Equation: A/500ft.-212°F=B

    Sorry about my earlier comment I was wrong.
    The boiling point of water in Reno is 203.2
    The equation is A/500=212-b where A=4400 so
    4400/500=212-b
    8.8=212-b
    b=212-8.8
    b=203.2

      boiling point at sea level is 212 degrees so if we go up to reno, which is 4,400 higher, the boiling point would go down one degree for every 500 ft. which makes the boiling point here in reno around 204 to 203 degrees.
