Twenty-Four

September29

You must write a mathematical expression that equals 24. You must use the numbers 3, 3, 8, and 8 exactly once and you may not use any other numbers. You can use any operations (+, -, x, ÷, or ( )) as many times as you need. You are not allowed to paste numbers together (i.e. 3 and 8 ≠ 38).

  32. October 3rd, 2013 at 8:44 pm      Reply lorene2013 Says:

    Dear Mrs. Ellison:

I have done your 24 challenge and I have to hand it to you, you chose a hard one. I mean on monday the problem stumped a room full of adults. So, coming back to the point. I got the answer of 24 by using:

    8/(3-(8/3))=24

    Here’s how.

I used my scientific calculator by trying many different combinations to reach the solution. When I found the answer, I got my parents to help me understand it. (How it eqauls 24). This is how it was explained to me:

8/3 is the same as 2 2/3 or 2.6 repeating.
    Then I subtracted it from 3. (3-2.6 repeating=.3 reapeating or 1/3)
    then I divided 8 by 1/3.
I used the same change, change you taught me. So I got the equation of 8 over 1 times 3 over 1. Which is the same as 8*3 equalling 24.

    From a satisfied student called,
    Loren T. Elder

There are three ways to get to 24, but only way to get a whole number 24.
    1. (8*8)/3+3=24.333
    2. 8/(3-(8/3)=24.24
    3.the sq root of (8×8) x sq root of (3×3) = 24

    You can do 8•8=64 and 64 divided by 3 = 21.1 and I rounded it up to 21. Then I added 21 and 3 which = 24. I did it
