Dear Math Maggie,
We have been learning about multiplying integers in school. I’m all good if there are only two integers to multiply together but I’m totally lost when my teacher puts more than two integers on the paper. π Β I know that when I multiply two numbers and the signs are the same the answer is positive and when the signs are different the answer is negative. Can you help me figure out what the sign to give the answer when I am multiplying 5 negative numbers? Β What about 4 negative numbers and a positive number? Please explain!
Sincerely,
Positively in a Negative Rut!
If you multiply a – and + it= a+ number.
– times – equals +
– times + equals –
+ times – equals –
+ times + equals +
let’s take this problems:
-5 X (-3) X (-7) X (-4) X (-1)
so we will focus on the -5 X -3
when multiplying with a negative, just do multiplication, and think the – is not there, so it turns to -5 X -3 = 15(REMEMBER TO ADD THE SIGN WHEN DONE IF IT IS – X + OR + X ). Now do it to the same ones, -7 X -4 = 28, 28 X 15 = 420, 420 X -1 = -420
So lets instead do the same problem with the negatives, to a positive, so 5 X 3 = 15, 7 X 4 = 28, 15 X 28 = 420, 420 X 1 = 420
If u got 4 negative numbers and a positive number u would still get a negative because the problem never changes the negatives and positives.
Dear Positively in a Negative Rut,
The answer to your questions is, if it was four negative numbers and one positive number, then it would equal a positive number, because the product of an even number of negative numbers is a positive and the product of an odd number of negative numbers is a negative. So the five negatives would equal a negative result, because 5 is an odd number.
Sincerely,
Loren and Math Maggie
well 1 you do the one with parentheses 2 the one after that 3 the next one then the next one then lastly you do the one
(s) next to the parentheses
If you multiply 5 negative numbers your answer will be negative: -5 times -5 times -5 times -5 times -5=-3,125! If you multiply 4 negatives and a positive you get a negative: -4 times -4 times -4 times -4 times 4=-64
it would be a positive number because two negatives equal on positive so saying that -5 * -4 equals positive 20 plus a positive it will and would a positive number as your product.
If you are multiplying 5 negative numbers your answer will be negative because for example -2*-2=8 then 8*-2=-16 then -16*-2=32 and 32*-2=-64. If you are multiplying 4 negative numbers and 1 positive you would get a positive because a – * -=a+ then a + * – =a- then a – * -=a+ then a + * + =a+
Sorry the answer is a positive number because 4 negative numbers are a positive number. And a positive number times a positive number is a positive number.
It’s the same thing as normal multiplication you will still get a negative number.
You will get a positive number for example, -2 times -3 times -4 times -5 times 1 equals 120.
When you are multiplying 5 negative numbers it is going to be positive because if it is all negative then it will be positive, just like multiplying 2 numbers. If you multiply 4 negative numbers and a positive number it will be just like multiplying 2 numbers, a positive and a negative, the answer will be negative.
If all of the numbers are the same signs the answer will be positive. If one of the numbers are different from all the other numbers the answer will be negative.
When you multiply 5 negative numbers the answer will be a positive answer because whenever you multiply the3 same signs then your answer will always be positive. If you have 4 negative and 1 positive number then your answer will be a negative number because whenever you multiply different signs the answer will always be a negative number.
-5+-4=-1
if you are multiplying an odd number of negative digits, (for example 5) the answer will be a negative number. if there are 4 negative and one positive then the answer is positive for example -2x-1x-4x-5×5= 200.
You will get a positive answer when you are multiplying 5 negative numbers. You will get a positive answer because if you break them up in groups, multiply them, and then add the answers you will get a positive answer. You will get a positive answer if you multiply 4 negative numbers and a positive. You will get a positive answer because if you break them up in groups, multiply them, then add the answers you will get a positive answer.
If you were to multiply 5 negatives together the answer would be negative. Such as if you did -2 x -2 x -2 x -2 x -2, 4 x 4 x -2, 16 x -2, which would equal negative 32 (-32). If you were to multiply 4 negatives and 1 positive the answer would be positive, because if all the negatives were multiplied first the next step would be all positives multiplied together which means the answer is positive and multiplication can be multiplied in any order and you’ll still get the same answer which means that the answer would still be positive no matter how you multiply it. Such as -2 x -3 x 1 x -3 x -2=___
-6 x 1 x -6=___ -6 x -6 =36.
when you are multiplying 5 negative numbers the first two numbers combined are positive because – and – = positive and then you multiply it by the other – number and then it is negative because + and -=- then you multiply it by the other negative number and it is positive and finally you multiply it by the last negative number and the answer is negative but when you have 4 negatives and 1 positive the answer is positive.
multiplying both 5 – numbers and 4- numbers and 1 + number will give you a positive answer.
when your multiplying 5 negative numbers use a negative sign
when your multiplying 4 negative and a positive number use a negative sign because there are more negatives than positives
When you are multiplying 5 negative numbers you would multiply the first two negative numbers, then multiply the next two negative numbers , then they both come out as positive, then you would multiply a positive number by a negative number and get a negative so the answer is negative.
When you multiple 4 negative numbers and one positive number you would get a positive number because you would multiple two negative numbers that will be a positive number and multiple the other two negative numbers and that would get a positive, then add those positive numbers together plus the other positive number and you will get a positive number.
with 5 negatives it would still be a positive because there all negative numbers. also on 4 negatives and a positive it would still be a negative because there is at least 1 negative and 1 positive.
When your multiplying 5 negative numbers the outcome is a negative number. Here’s an example: -2 β’ -7 β’ -4 β’ -5 β’ -3= -840.
-5 β’ -3 = 15 β’ -4 = -60 β’ -2= 120 β’ -7 = -840.
When your multiplying 4 negative numbers and 1 positive the out come is a positive number. Here’s an example: -3 β’ -6 β’ -2 β’ -7 β’ 5= 1260. -6 β’ -2 = 12 β’ -7 = -84 β’ -3 = 252 β’ 5 = 1260.
The sign would be positive if you multiplied 5 negative numbers. The sign would be negative if you multiplied 4 negative numbers and 1 positive numbers. ( I HOPE I GOT THIS RIGHT) π
You multiply two numbers at a time. With 4 negative and one positive number you end up with a positive. With 5 negative numbers you end up with a negative number.
negative, because of the rule and there’s more negatives.
If you multiply 5 negative numbers the answer will still be a positive even though there are more than one negative number you follow the same rule. When multiplying 4 negatives and a positive you will get a negative because you follow the same rules – times + will equal a – number
if you were multiplying four negative numbers and a positive number your answer would be a negative number, because the four negative numbers would cancel out and you would only have a negative number and a positive number and according to the triangle(-,-,+) you would get a negative number.
wait i messed up the four would cancel out and become a positive then you would have another positive number and positive multiplied by a positive is a positive.
I would do them one at a time. for example: -5 (2) -4 (-1) =
so -5 x 2 would be -10. and then -4 x -1=4. so then you multiply
-10×4 which equals -40!
well you just have to subtracted the numbers and the one that is biggest put the negitive or positive sign next to it. then BOOM your done
Thanks Cerena! Why would you change multiplication to subtraction?
well you have to subtract the #’s
Thanks Briana! Why would you subtract the numbers?
i think that with 5 negative numbers when your multiplying u just do the oppisite and. With 4 negative numbers and a positive you have its whatever number is bigger like if the positive number is bigger it will be positive and visa versa.
Thanks Kayla! Are the rules for multiplying integers and adding integers the same?
you have to put a negative sign because your multiplying 5 negative numbers. if you do 4 negative numbers and a positive number its a positive number
For the 5 negative numbers it would be positive. For the 4 negative numbers and a positive it would be negative.
Thanks Deija! Have a look at your answer again…I think you might have it mixed up. π
you are going to get a nagative number because there is more than 1 nagative.
you have to multipy 4 and 5 and you get 20
well you have to make a triangle lay out then you put a minis in the top and the side and then you put the plus on the bottom the if the first to numbers are – and a + you get minis and then you do the same thing and get you answer
Thanks Isaiah! How does the triangle help you figure out whether you will get a positive or a negative answer if you are multiplying 4 negative numbers or 5 negative numbers?
(-5)* 2*(-1)*(-2)=-20
If you are multiplying 4 negative numbers and a positive number you’re answer will be negative because you have an uneven number of negatives and positives.
Thanks Isabella! Does the number of negatives make a difference to whether my answer will be positive or negative?
if there are 5 integers the answer will be negative if there are 4 the answer will be positive even=positive and odd=negative
Multiplying intergers is easy say you have -3[23] it seems hard but acually its easy its just plain multiplecation just with negitive numbers so -3×23=69!
well if your multiplying five negative numbers or four negative and a positive i think it will come out as a negative…because a lot of negatives can take over a single positive i think
Thanks Naila! Can negatives overtake positives when we multiply?
hello, well if you have 5 negitives you will have a positive same thing with 4 negitives, their is also a tirangle where it looks like this but mine will be side ways. if it is negitive times negitive cover them up and you will see them positie sighn that also helps you know it will be a positive.by if its opposite sighns then it would be negitive.cover up the positive and negitive you will see you have a negitive left over π π yw.
if you have 4 negatives and 1 positive you use the triangle method you can use your finger to cover the 1 positive and the 1 negative it will leave you two negatives and your answer will be positive.
Well first off you start with the part you know. Like lets say all of the negative’s. You will multiply them all together and then once you get that you will have to subtract the positive number.
Thanks AJ! Will you subtract the negative?
There answer is going to be positive because when you use the triangle a positive and a positive is a negative and a negative and a negative is a positive and the problem is saying its using negatives so the answer is a positive :}
it will be positive because if your numbers are even then your answer will be positive. (:
it is 20
Thanks Gerardo! What is 20?
if theres a odd numer it will be nagitive if there is a even amount it will be positive
Well lets say the numbers are -2+-4+-6+5+-9 The number would be negative because -2+-4+-6+5-9=16 -2+-4+-6+-9=21-5=16
Thanks Ally! What happens when you multiply those numbers?
Well when you put a – and a – together you get a positive a + but if you put a – and a + together you get a –
if you have one – sign and one + sign you will have one – .then if you have two + signs you will have a – answer and if you have two – you will have one – number like this -6(-7)(-5) you will have a – answer
if you multiply 5 negative numbers = negative and for 4 negative numbers = posative
with 5 (-) numbers you get(-), but with 4(-) numbers and a(+) you get (+)
with 5( – )numbers you get a – number and with 4 – numbers a + number you get a + number see i am smart like that π stay cool have a good day π π
i think that 5 negitive numbers it will equal 1 negitive number
[3]x[4]x[5]x[2]x[9]=negitive
4 negitive numbers will equal a positive number
[6]x[5]x[3]x[2]=positive
WELL if have 5 negative ur gonna have a negative cause -+-=+then add another – ur gonna have a negative which equals positive then if u add anothher – ur gonna have a positive then if add the last – ur gonna get a negative for 5 – numbers
If you multiply 5 negative numbers it will still be positive because it is the same as 2 numbers. When you multiply 4 negative numbers and a positive number it will still be positive because the 4 negative numbers equals a positive and when you you multiply 2 positive numbers it equals a positive number.
the 5 negative numbers would still be positive because the numbers are still negative.the 4 negatives would be positive because the signs are diffrent
with 5 negative numbers your answer will be positive because the signs are still the same.with 4 negative numbers and a positive the answer will be negative because there is a different sign.
well if your multiplying 5 ( – ) and a ( + ) dont worry all u do is multiply all the numbers together and since you have more then 3 ( – ) u can determin weather or not its ( + ) or a ( – ) so thats how u do it :/ π π -_-
if you have 4 negatives and a positive you would first brake them up then you use the triangle to help you then multiply.
so if you have -5 times 4 it well be – because what ever bigger its going say there is a number that is -10 15 what ever is bigger it well be that number so your anwser -5
well it depends on what your doing if your doing a posative number the awnser will be negative and if you have a negative problem your awnser will be posative for example 3+3+3= 9
Thanks Symantha! What happens when you multiply those numbers?
-3+-2+-4+-1+1=-11
Thanks Tevin! What happens when you multiply those numbers?
All you have to do is to cut the multiplication problem into to and then do the problems until you get the final answer.
If you have a negative and a negative it will be a positive. If you have a positive and a negative it will be negative. So there you have your answer for math.
you have to add two out of the 5 numbers and add those after put your that answer to the side and multiply 2 other numbers and after u multiplied those 2 numbers multiply the answer u just got and the answer u put to the side and multiply them. your last number multiply to the answer u just got with the answer u got with your last answer. If u have 4 negative numbers and a positive number change the negatives to positive and add.
if ther both negitive numbers they = a + number so the answer is +20
If you have 5 -s you willget a – because all odd numbers = –
if you had 4 -s you will get a + because alleven number are +
if their are two negatives it equals a positive number so -5 x -4 =20
if you are multiplying 5 negatives then it will stay a negative and if you multiply 4 negatives and a postive number will still be negative
So if you are stuck with a 3 Integer problem like 3 X -4 X -8 you would have to combine the negatives to be in the same box then you would have 3 X (-4 X -8) you would have to do what is in the () first and you would have 3 X 32 then multiply them both to be the awnser and wola you have your awnser! 3 x 32 = 96 so your awnser would be 96!
If your multiplying 5 negative numbers you multiply the first four then you subtract the last number and then if you have 4 negative numbers and a positive number you will multiply your numbers then add them which would make it a positive number. I think.
well, first you need numbers, lets say that the numbers for the problem are….. (-5) times (-2) times (-8) times (-3) times 5. so
-5 times -2= (-10) then -8 times -3= (24) so………
-10 times 24 times 5= -1200.
if you have 5 negative number you have to put (-5) times and (-2) times (-8) time (-3) times so…. (-5) time 24=120
5 negative numbers will equal a positive no matter what and four negatives and a positive will still equal a negative no matter what
So when multiplying five negative numbers your answer will always be a negative number because; neg(x) neg(x) neg(x) neg(x) neg= neg.
1)neg(1) times neg(2)=pos
2)pos times neg(3)=neg
3)neg times neg(4)=pos
4)pos times neg(5)=neg
So when you multiply 4 negatives and a positive its always going to be a positive because; neg(x) neg(x) neg(x) neg(x) pos=pos
1)neg(1) times neg(2)=pos
2)pos times neg(3)=neg
3)neg(4) times neg=pos
4)pos times pos= pos
well is like this so if u 2(-) that equal an even but if you have any odd number it well be an negative number for example (-5)*(-1)*(-4) that will equal -20.
Math maggie when you multiply more than two numbers it is the same thing as multiplying two just more number if you have to multiply themThen it will possibly be positve beacause they negative and when you take them away it will be a positive and if there is a postive youre answer will be and negative because you will cross them off the negative but when you have the positve you have to cross out the postive and the negative which will lead you to a negative
When your multiplying 5 negative numbers the answer will be a negative number because two negatives equals a positive, so there is a leftover negative number which will make the answer a negative answer.
When you add 4 negative numbers and a positive number the sign for the answer will depend on the sum of the negative numbers. If the sum of the negative numbers are larger than the positive number the sign will be negative. If the positive number is greater than the sum of the negative numbers the sign will be positive.
What you all ways do first is do the first two integers since their both negative they make a positive. Now a positive plus a negative is negative. So now you’ve done three integers out of the five. Now you do a negative plus another negative because that’s the 4th negative. Now you have a positive so finally you need to add your last negative. You now have a negative. Remember – and + is – But – and – is positive.
if you have 4 negative numbers and there all less than the positive number than its going to be a positive number because you pass the zero on the number line. if you have two negatives it equals a positive.so if theres 4 negative its going to equal positive.
Multiplying 5 negative numbers, you would get a posotive number because a – x’s a – =’s a +. A + x’s a – =’s a -. A – x’s a – =’s a +. Samething for only 4 numbers but it would end up as a -.
If you have a negative and a positive integer, then the answer will always be negative
a – # = a – #, two – #s = a + #, 3 – #s = a – #, 4 – #s = a + #, 5 – #s = a – #
multplying the numbers 5,4,and 1 will always give you apositive number
the answer will always be positive if it is two negatives or positives added or multiplyed together ad will always be a negative answer if it is two opposites multiplied or added together
5 the answer would be negative -1 times -1 times -1 times -1 times -1
positive negative positive negative 4 spaces
4 the answer would be positive -1 times -1 times -1 times -1
positive negative positive 3 spaces
+*+ always equals + -*+ equals a – and -*- always equals a –
π
if you multiply 5 negative numbers you will give the answer negative sign. if you are mutiplying 4 negative numbers you will give the answer a positive sign or no sign at all.
Its Would Equal A Positive Number Because 4 Negative Numbers Equal A Positive Number And + Times += A Positive Numbers!
