Math Maggie (Math 7/8)

September1

Dear Math Maggie,

My friend Carl G. says it is possible to have the sum of two rational numbers be less than both rational numbers? How can this be if we are adding?! Please prove one of us correct by providing evidence one way or the other.

Sincerely,

Adding to my Confusion

the only way this will work is if both numbers are negative for example: -5+(-3)= -8 and negative eight is less than -5 and -3.

Because if u have improper and proper fractions or a mixed number than this is how u got this answer.

No you can’t because ratinal numbers when added equal a higher number because rational numbers can’t be negitive. πŸ˜€

  4. September 5th, 2013 at 12:06 pm      Reply dangelat2013 Says:

carl g. is right because by divideing it will make the sum of both ratios smaller than the actual rational numbers

  5. September 5th, 2013 at 3:02 pm      Reply seang2013 Says:

i do not think it is possible to have two rational numbers and have the sum be smaller than both. i just dont think it would be possible

  6. September 5th, 2013 at 3:03 pm      Reply nataleen2013 Says:

thats not posable because either way the number would be bigger.

  7. September 5th, 2013 at 3:19 pm      Reply mikaylas2013 Says:

No, I do not believe it is possible. Whenever you add a number the sum will always be larger than both numbers. I sat at my computer for like 20 minutes trying to think of ways for it to be possible, couldn’t find a problem with the sum less than both of the rational numbers:)

  8. September 5th, 2013 at 3:43 pm      Reply max mulligan Says:

Yes, it is possible. Your friend Carl G. is right because if you add -2 plus -3, it equals -5, which is less than both rational numbers.

  9. September 5th, 2013 at 3:47 pm      Reply jahmeyelb2013 Says:

Yes because if u use the distributive property u can can the less assignment

  10. September 5th, 2013 at 3:56 pm      Reply coltonr2013 Says:

if you add two negative numbers you get a smaller number. for example -4+-7=-11

  11. September 5th, 2013 at 4:00 pm      Reply jordand2013 Says:

If you use (-6)+(-3) it will equal (-9), which is less than (-6) and (-3).

  12. September 5th, 2013 at 4:10 pm      Reply Adam kamka Says:

Carl.G is correct because lets say that -1+1=0 or -2+2=0,so your answer would be less than both numbers since the absolute value of -2 is 2. so 0 is less than both rational numbers.

  13. September 5th, 2013 at 4:16 pm      Reply nickolash2013 Says:

no because in rastional numbers we cant do that

You can get summer fruit, the classic, the veggie, the dipper, smoked kielbasa sausage, brims spicy pulled pork, meatball sliders, teriyaki chicken burgers, smoked tri tip combo, turkey bacon and avo sando, and all the food

  15. September 5th, 2013 at 5:26 pm      Reply kyleej2013 Says:

Evidence is that you can have -2 + -5 = -7 which is less than both numbers

  16. September 5th, 2013 at 5:31 pm      Reply Angel m Says:

Well let me tell you he is wrong!
    -1, 000 + 979 = -21

  17. September 5th, 2013 at 6:19 pm      Reply curtisc2013 Says:

Carl G. is wrong if you are adding because even if you use negative numbers you still cant get lower than one of your original rational numbers that you were adding with.

  18. September 5th, 2013 at 7:14 pm      Reply lindseyb2013 Says:

yes Carl is right because if you add -7 + (-4) that would equal -11.
-11 is less than -7 and also less than -4. πŸ™‚

  19. September 5th, 2013 at 7:59 pm      Reply aaronn2013 Says:

Aaron Nadon it is possible if one of the numbers is 0

  20. September 5th, 2013 at 8:13 pm      Reply liamh2013 Says:

it is possible because -1+-1=-2 and -2 is less than 1-.

  21. September 5th, 2013 at 8:25 pm      Reply piyadas2013 Says:

If you were adding two negative numbers such as -5 and -12 the answer would be -17 and -17 is less than -5 and -12. So it is possible if we add two negative together. πŸ™‚

  22. September 5th, 2013 at 8:45 pm      Reply christopherb2013 Says:

because it cant be higher than 10.Becase its written completely different.

  23. September 5th, 2013 at 8:47 pm      Reply Kenny Says:

No. There needs to be a higher number for it to work. so it is impossible to have them both lower.

  24. September 5th, 2013 at 8:59 pm      Reply elizabethc2013 Says:

Yes, if you are adding two negative numbers. For example, -3+(-5)=-8 So negative eight is less than the numbers.

  25. September 5th, 2013 at 9:36 pm      Reply amymu2013 Says:

if you have two negative rational numbers added together the sum will be less than the two rational numbers added together.
    -2 + -3 = -5

  26. September 5th, 2013 at 9:43 pm      Reply jacobes2013 Says:

you can because same change change would make 2 negative numbers if the first number is negative witch added would give you a bigger negative number ex/ -9 + -21=-30

  27. September 5th, 2013 at 11:07 pm      Reply prestonh2013 Says:

you can not have two rational numbers and get a sum smaller than both of them. For example .2-(-.3)equals -.1. Another example 8-(-16 eaquals -8. That is how i can prove their can not be two rational numbers and the sum is smaller

  28. September 6th, 2013 at 11:52 am      Reply noahc2013 Says:

Well, if you add two rational numbers together and they are negative it can be less but not positive. Carl is right because if you add two negative numbers together it will be less. Example: 8 plus 8 equals 16, -8 plus -8 equals -16

  29. September 9th, 2013 at 7:23 am      Reply ysabellal2013 Says:

If you add two negitive numbers it would be less that the two rational numbers but if you add two positive numbers they be bigger.

  30. September 9th, 2013 at 3:55 pm      Reply tylerw2013 Says:

You have to add a negative plus another negative you will get a negative number because it will equal a negative so for example
    (-24)+(-24)=-48

  31. September 9th, 2013 at 3:58 pm      Reply celestinase2013 Says:

Yes because if you add -2+ -3 which are both less than rational numbers, so your friend Carl G. is right

  32. September 10th, 2013 at 6:52 pm      Reply raynai2013 Says:

Both It is Possible If Both Numbers Are Negative Like -8 + -6 = -14 which Is Less than both Numbers.

  33. September 11th, 2013 at 1:48 pm      Reply mackenziehedstrom Says:

both is possible because if you add two numbers and one number is a negative and larger than the positive number then it will come out as a negative number.like (-4)+ (+3)=-1

  34. September 11th, 2013 at 6:09 pm      Reply yvetter2013 Says:

your friend is correct because -2 + (-3) is less than a rational number so that means it is possible

  35. September 11th, 2013 at 7:33 pm      Reply axelr2013 Says:

it is possible because when you add negative numbers you technically subtract

  36. September 11th, 2013 at 7:35 pm      Reply axelr2013 Says:

    example:(-50)+(-50)=-100

  37. September 13th, 2013 at 2:30 pm      Reply ryanp2013 Says:

    An example:(-75)+(-75)=-150 and thats how.

  38. September 17th, 2013 at 3:11 pm      Reply ckrysteonaw2013 Says:

you can get a sum smaller than both numbers because sum means multiply and anything times zero is zero:]

  39. September 23rd, 2013 at 11:59 am      Reply daytonl2013 Says:

The sum means addition, so Carl G. is wrong.
